As today is International Women’s Day, something that is widely celebrated in Italy, I wanted to feature one of my favorite Italian women who continuously inspires me and epitomizes what I think a strong, Italian woman is like.

Although I’ve only known her for a couple years, Elena Evangelisti Forti has been such an inspiration to me. She’s the cousin of my boyfriend’s grandfather, and a very close member of his family. When I first met her, something immediately clicked between us and we spent the whole dinner laughing together, although my basic understanding of Italian didn’t make it the easiest. Since then, she’s recently informed me that my Italian has gotten “molto meglio”, much better, and we can have longer conversations more easily.

I did an “interview” with her the other day at lunch and she was so excited to be featured here on my blog, even though I warned her I don’t have a large platform. She seemed excited that I was interested in her life and herself as a person, because she describes her own life as boring and nothing special. I strongly disagree with that, for a variety of reasons that I wanted to share today.

She is a neighborhood institution and makes everyone’s day better when she comes around the corner

She calls herself the “nonna” of the neighborhood and makes a point to smile and say good morning to everyone she passes on her daily walks. She has her favorite supermarket, fruit market, butcher, hair dressers and the people who go along with it. Everyone knows her as Signora Elena and she takes pride in her neighbourhood of Balduina.

At her age, she lives alone, doesn’t take elevators and walks almost everywhere

Elena is severely claustrophobic and doesn’t take elevators or drive through tunnels and has never got on an airplane. This means she does a lot of walking which she says is the key to her high level of mobility at her age of 93. You’ll find her patiently navigating the stairs or asking one of the neighborhood boys to help her with her grocery bags on a daily basis.

She had the kind of marriage that is #goals in this day and age.

She met her late husband Vincenzo when she was 19 and spent decades happily married to him. She describes him as the sweetest man and someone who was always there for her.

She goes to live in the country alone for 6 months out of the year and loves every minute of being in the mountains and out of the craziness of Rome.

Through her husband, she found one of her special places in Italy, Triponzo, a small town in Umbria. Every May-October, Elena packs up her house and goes to stay in her summer home. She has a large pack of cats who she feeds regularly (once we smuggled some leftovers in her purse to take home to her gatti) and a close group of friends who call her throughout the year reminding her of how soon she’ll be back in her favorite place.

She lived through WWII in Italy and has some poignant stories to tell about it

During the war when the Nazis invaded Rome, Elena went to live in Umbria at Vincenzo’s family home. She eventually returned in ’44 after the Americans liberated the city, making the trip with Vincenzo and her brother, all on bikes and sleeping outdoors over the course of the 3 days.

She lives for her family and her relationship with them is the most important thing to her

Although her son and his family don’t live in Rome and she doesn’t get to see them as often as she would like, they make her happier than anything else. She’ll cook her son all of his favorites every time he visits and makes sure to keep in touch over the phone with all of her relatives.

She also had a true BFF relationship with Edoardo’s grandmother, the wife of her cousin. Elena and Marisa were like sisters and they did everything together. Elena talks about her all the time and regrets that she’s had to live to this age without her “sister” by her side.

Her favorite place in the world is Rome and her identity as a Roman is very important to her.

As with many Romans, Elena has a lot to say about the situation in Rome. The government is corrupt, nothing works, and people just aren’t like they used to be. Regardless, when I asked Elena what her favorite place was, fully expecting to hear about her mountain get-away, she said it was Rome. The city she was born and and has lived in all of her life. “Sono romana e ci tengo!”, “I am Roman and I always will be!”

And happy Women’s Day to all of the ladies out there and especially to the strong women in my life I’m blessed to have. I love you all more than anything.

La Festa delle Donne... e una Donna Particolare

Siccome oggi è la Festa delle Donne, giornata molto celebrata in Italia, volevo presentare sul mio blog una delle mie donne italiane preferite che continuamente mi ispira e incarna quello che penso sia una vera donna italiana.

Anche se l'ho conosciuta solo da un paio d'anni, Elena Evangelisti Forti mi è stata subito di grande ispirazione. È la cugina del nonno del mio ragazzo, ma un membro molto stretto della sua famiglia. Quando l'ho incontrata la prima volta, qualcosa è scattato subito tra noi e abbiamo passato l'intera cena a ridere insieme, anche se la mia comprensione dell'italiano era molto bassa. Da quel punto in poi, mi ha informato che il mio italiano è diventato "molto meglio", e possiamo avere conversazioni più profonde.

Ho fatto una piccola intervista con lei l'altro giorno a pranzo ed era così eccitata di essere presente sul mio blog, anche se l'ho avvertita che non ho una piattaforma grande. Sembrava entusiasta che sono interessata alla sua vita, perché descrive la sua vita come una vita noiosa e nulla di speciale. Non sono assolutamente d'accordo, per una serie di motivi che voglio condividere con voi oggi.

È un'istituzione di quartiere e migliora i giorni di tutti quando arriva

Si definisce la "nonna" del quartiere e si prende cura di sorridere e di dire buongiorno a tutti quelli che passa nelle sue passeggiate. Ha il suo supermercato preferito, il fruttivendolo, il macellaio, i parrucchieri e tutte le persone che ci lavorano. Tutti la conoscono come la Signora Elena e lei è orgogliosa del suo quartiere Balduina.

Alla sua età, vive da sola, non prende ascensori e cammina quasi ovunque

Elena ha la claustrofobia e non prende ascensori o guida attraverso i tunnel e non è mai salita su un aereo. Ciò significa che fa un sacco di passeggiate che è la chiave della sua ottima salute all'età di 93 anni, come spesso dice. La troverai a prendere pazientemente le scale “piano piano” o a chiedere a un ragazzo del quartiere di aiutarla con le sue buste della spesa.

Ha avuto il tipo di matrimonio che noi tutti vorremmo avere.

Ha incontrato suo marito, Vincenzo, quando aveva 19 anni e ha trascorso decenni felicemente sposata con lui. Lei lo descrive come un uomo molto dolce e qualcuno che è sempre stato lì per lei.

Vive in campagna da sola per 6 mesi all'anno e ama ogni minuto speso in montagna e fuori dal caos di Roma.

Il paesino di Triponzo, Umbria, è uno dei suoi posti preferiti. Da maggio ad ottobre, Elena scappa da Roma per la tranquillità della campagna. Ci sono tanti gatti che vengono da lei a mangiare (una volta gli avanzi del ristorante sono andati nella borsa da portare a casa solo per loro) e un bel gruppo di amici che la chiamano per tutto l'anno per ricordarle quanto manca all’estate.

Ha vissuto durante la seconda guerra mondiale in Italia e ha storie commoventi da raccontare

Durante la guerra, quando i nazisti hanno invaso Roma, Elena è andata a vivere in Umbria nella casa della famiglia di Vincenzo. Alla fine è tornata nel '44 dopo che gli americani hanno liberato la città, facendo il viaggio con suo fratello e la fidanzata in bici e dormendo all'aperto nel corso dei 3 giorni.

Vive per la sua famiglia e il suo rapporto con loro è la cosa più importante per lei

Anche se suo figlio e la sua famiglia non vivono a Roma e non riesce a vederli tutte le volte che vorrebbe, la rendono più felice di ogni altra cosa. Cucina per suo figlio tutti i suoi piatti preferiti ogni volta che la visita e si tiene in contatto al telefono con tutti i suoi parenti.

Aveva una grande amicizia con la nonna di Edoardo, la moglie di suo cugino. Elena e Marisa erano come sorelle e hanno fatto sempre tutto insieme. Elena parla di lei spesso e si rammarica che abbia dovuto vivere fino a quest'età senza la "sorella" al suo fianco.

Il suo posto preferito nel mondo è Roma e la sua identità di romana è molto importante per lei.

Come tanti romani, Elena ha molto da dire sulla situazione a Roma. Il governo è spesso inadeguato, niente funziona e le persone non sono come prima. Nonostante questo, quando ho chiesto ad Elena qual è il suo posto preferito in Italia, mi ha risposto sempre Roma. È la città dove è nata e ha vissuto per tutta la sua vita. "Sono romana e ci tengo!", mi ha detto con entusiasmo.

Grazie molte Elena per la tua apertura e per aver condiviso il tuo passato con me. Adoro ascoltare le tue storie e vedere come rendi un po' più felice la vita di tutti quelli che ti circondano. E buona festa delle donne a tutte e soprattutto alle donne forti che ho la fortuna di conoscere. Vi voglio bene.
